Reviews of The Bosch Lawnmower Range
The various Rotak models of Bosch lawnmower are beautifully engineered rotary electric mowers. Lightweight yet robust, a Bosch lawnmower is more than capable of handling any garden grasscutting jobs you have.
There’s quite a range of options under the Rotak brand; choices of power type and of course size. However there are features that mark out a Rotak mower and which can be seen on all models in the range:-
All Bosch Rotak lawnmowers feature grass combs, which sweep the grass from the edge of the mowing strip into the path of the blades.
What this means is that you can so you can mow right up to the edge of the lawn, even against walls or fences. This is helped by setting the wheels inside the line of the cutting blade as well.
The height of cut is easily adjustable by the setting of just one central control lever, generally between 20 and 70mm.
.
Another feature on all Rotak models (except the 32) is the Ergoflex handle system, where the mower handle, handle position and handgrips have been designed to allow you to find the most comfortable position for you, so reducing strain on arms and back. You can change hand position regularly, whilst mowing – a bit like bar ends on a bike I always think.
There is a good range of sizes available, to suit more or less every size of domestic garden, together with a choice of power options; mains driven and cordless:-
Mains Driven
There is a choice of five cutting widths, from 32cm (around 12.5”) up to 43cm (just under 17”) to handle anything from the smallest patch of grass up to lawns of 600 sq m or more.
The power available from a 240V mains mower is impressive too – the top-of-the-range Rotak 43 has an 1800W motor which will cut grass up to 30cm tall, according to Bosch. Even the smallest, the new Rotak 32, has 1100W to call on.
Of course, the downside of any mains model is the power cord. In some situations this can be a problem – where parts of the garden are a long way from a power supply, or if there are awkward flower beds to negotiate for example. But in most cases it’s just a matter of designing your route around the lawn and exercising common sense with regard to proper safe procedures.
Price is also worth pointing out. A mains Rotak will be substantially cheaper than the comparable-size cordless model – some 50 – 60% less in fact. It actually points to the good value that these machines offer – the Rotak 43 is around £200, not bad at all for a 43cm mower.
Cordless
There are 3 cordless Rotak models to choose from, with cutting widths of 34 up to 43cm, powered by Lithium-ion batteries.
The convenience of a cordless model cannot really be denied. In situations such as those referred to above – distance from a power supply, complicated garden layout and so on – the freedom of not having to worry about a power lead can be valuable indeed.
Of course, the question of charging has to be addressed. This is not too bad however – a cordless Rotak takes only 1 hour to recharge fully from empty, thanks to the lithium-ion battery technology. 80% charge can be achieved in only 30 minutes.
Run time on a single charge will depend to an extent on how hard it has to work, but you could reckon on 30-40 minutes. The Rotak 43Li has dual battery capacity to get you towards the top of that range.
Obviously a cordless mower will be a little heavier than the corresponding mains model, but not excessively so, due to the plastic construction. This is not flimsy plastic though, these are pretty durable machines.
As already mentioned, the battery technology is reflected in the price – you will pay more for the convenience that cordless operation brings.
The video here is mainly about the cordless models – but it also shows you how the Ergoflex system and the grass combs actually work:-
The Choice
It depends, I guess on individual circumstances of garden design and budget, which is the choice for you. The product development and quality of a Bosch lawnmower should not disappoint.
It’s worth mentioning that every Bosch Rotak lawnmower carries a 24 month warranty.
The tables below give an overview of the Bosch lawnmower range, with a comparison of the main features . Do you like the convenience of a cordless mower, or might you need the undoubted power of a mains-driven model? How big an area do you have to cope with? How important is cost?
